“Making a website just got easier” - Tyler Moore

We all make mistakes; I’ve made a doozy on this one. I still laugh to myself when I think about it. Right now, months later, I feel upset at my naivety, plain old ignorance, when taking on the task of building my own do-it-yourself website.
Backstory
The plan was to campervan around the country. It motivated me to look for something that I could do online to generate income. In February 2024 I found Stuart Ross and his Modern Wealthy program. It wasn’t the program that attracted me, it was the values Ross spoke of. I signed up for the monthly Launch You course. What I learnt in the initial stages excited me, twelve months later I’m still excited by the journey. Ross has an accelerated course, it helps you launch early with building a website, mentoring and technical support. It’s a business you are investing in; you must have the capital to accelerate your learning and create income sooner. There are costs to maintain your online business, just the same as in the brick-and-mortar world. I’ve been down that track, I know what to expect. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the capital to accelerate, my journey took a different path. I choose to DIY.
WordPress
I searched YouTube for instructions to build a website. I was aware of tutors who said you could have your website built and up for business in days. No coding was needed, you just have to follow the tutorial. I found a YouTube tutor who specialised in showing you how to build a WordPress website. WordPress because it is what Ross recommended.
My Experience
The YouTube tutor is right, a website can be built in days. But, if you are a novice like me, there are so many pitfalls you can fall into, purely due to inexperience. I now know you need an approved website name, a host for your website and sufficient knowledge to maintain and update your content. No easy task for a novice. Following the YouTube tutorial is not as easy as the tutor makes it sound. I had to backtrack the video often, just to keep up with the instructions. I found the whole experience frustrating beyond belief. I got the website to the beta stage after two months. The doozy mistake, I gave control of the website to someone else, who claimed they had built their website in five hours. It’s the new year; I will deal with that issue when my own content is at least a month ahead.
Outsource
I have given this counsel in an earlier blog. If you do not have the technical background, bite the bullet, find a company you trust, and outsource it. I got my own website built by outsourcing it, by a company my son is associated with. Had I done my homework and completed the Modern Marketing modules before I attempted DIY, I would have saved time, money and my sanity. I had hoped to build a second website myself, with WordPress on behalf of my partner. A second income stream is always welcome.
Spend your valuable time creating content, which is where your online income is coming from.
