“No, it’s not a waste of time.” - Unknown

We’ve all heard this expression at one time or another. For us retirees it’s used in the context of learning new skills. Learning skills through further study, through coaching to have a better golf swing or following a plan laid out by experts in whatever field. Taking on an occupation unrelated to the field you previously worked in, is a challenge to adapt to new skills. In these endeavors’ we pursue as seniors, the comment is sometimes made, “Aren’t you too old and wasting your golden years on stuff you should have done years ago.”
Valid point, but us humans all make decisions that suit us in the present without realizing the impact on our lives down the track. For those who have prepared well for their golden years, congratulations, you deserve a pat on the back. For others like me, who for whatever reason are still living from paycheck to paycheck, this is our reality. There are many of us in this situation. This is the question we should ask ourselves, “Do we accept our reality, or do we do everything in our power to change it?”
My Experience
I’m of the opinion that it is never a waste of time to pursue your interests in your retirement years. When I qualified for the national superannuation, I was incredibly happy. After years of inconsistent income, to have a regular superannuation payment was a blessing. How I got here is a story for another time.
Thank goodness for my partner, thank goodness for my children, thank goodness for Australia, and thank goodness for golf. My family, visits to Australia, my misplaced passion for golf and one day a week as a courier all made the years from age 65 to 69 flash by. Then my partner’s plan to campervan was the trigger for me to consider making a living online. I hoped to replace the income from my one day a week courier job. A year earlier my partner resigned from her fulltime job. My goal was to replace those two lost incomes with an online income.
Finding the Online Course
At the age of 69 I signed up to an online course. There are so many advocates online for this way or that way of generating income in the virtual world. How to choose an online course, one that is right for you? Some sounded too good to be true; a lot of hype, make a six-figure income in just six days, it only takes 8 minutes of your time a day for 2 weeks to start making $5000 a month. Others were more realistic in the message they promoted. YouTube is the platform I favor, my search started there. If it sounded too good to be true, it probably is, those ones I ruled out immediately. If a message spoke of commitment, overcoming your fears about technology, about support through the learning process, I looked closer.
What attracted me to the course I signed up for was the message. As a young adult I knocked on doors trying to get people to buy the Encyclopedia Britannica. Later I began training to be an insurance salesman. Both involved cold calling, something that gave me the shivers, pun intended. This chap said there will be no cold calling, it appealed immediately, so I looked deeper. His message was clear from the start, considerable effort on your part was necessary, the learning curve will be steep. If you followed the path, the plan he has for you, and you are ready to change your life, this is the program for you.
Learning New Skills
Learning new skills is never a waste of time. No matter where you are in life or what your circumstances are, the benefits from pursuing your endeavors are invaluable. The benefits to yourself, your family, and the people you care about will be appreciated and they will be inspired by the efforts you make.
Follow me in my journey, in endeavoring to make a living online.
