Reality bites

"Life becomes more interesting the older you get. A lot of us are ruled by fear during our lives... Once you lose fear, life becomes sweeter and that happens as you get older." - Joanna Lumley

Whether we think about it or not, there are reality moments when we are reminded of who we really are. How we view ourselves is unique to every individual. I consider myself as one who looks on the positive side of life. I’m a senior, 70 years old, age I accept but I don’t think about it. My attitude doesn’t tell me I’m old, even in my head I don’t believe I’m old. Yes, I must remember where I put things, still, in my mind, I’m not old. The occasional twinge here and there and some stiffness when you get out of a car after sitting for a while, reminds me it’s just part of the territory, aging. Behind my eyes I sometimes think I’m still a young adult.

But reality bites.

A Boy and his Dad

It's a usual day for me, looking in the cupboards and knowing you need something. I head down to the local supermarket to find what I wanted. After I purchase it, I head out to the car park. At the carpark, what is a normal, everyday experience, turned into a reality moment.

The carpark is full. On this occasion I put my shopping on the rear seat. While doing so, a boy arrived at the car next to me. I closed my door and waited while the boy struggled to seat himself. At that moment, his dad speaks up, “Hurry up… you’re holding up the old man by you”. I laughed in response saying to his dad through the open window, “ha-ha… I guess I had to hear it sometime”. Laughing we both acknowledged each other and left.

I got home and related the story to my partner, with mirth she replies, “that’s so funny, you are a victim of your own delusion, that’s a blog”.

Reality and Delusion

I see recent photos of myself and look in the mirror, yep, this vessel I travel in is getting old. Is it really delusional to think of oneself as still being young? I think it was Stephen Hawking who said something like, information is never lost. To me the essence of who we are, the information, is never lost, we are forever young, even if reality bites.
