"The easiest way to describe it is that it's a simplified way to read a putt. You just need to know one factor about every putt and get a correct break on the putt." - Mark Sweeney

Aimpoint Putting

Aimpoint Putting is here to stay for all golfers of any standard. There is one exception,

professionals who make their living playing golf.

Rick Shiels

I’ve been a fan and subscriber of Rick Shiels Golf for many years. He recently stated that he will not give up this method even if the PGA decides to ban it on the tour. Rick is a good golfer but his short game and putting have been glaring weaknesses. Since adopting the aimpoint method, his success with the putter has been so much better, that for him giving it up is out of the question.

PGA

The PGA is considering banning this method due to time issues. Time penalties are already in place for slow play. Warnings are given to groups who fall behind, this is especially important in tournament play. On the putting surface slow play hasn’t been an obvious problem. Until the Wyndham Championship and Aaron Rai. The time Rai took to make a short putt using aimpoint was beyond reasonable.

Ban It

There are other important considerations for the PGA. I watch all my PGA golf via subscription. From a fan perspective, watching someone step all over the green, even right up to the hole is inconsiderate of other golfers and for viewers. It certainly lessens the entertainment value. Where is the skill if you use an electronic level, even if just in practice. Read by your professional eye not your professional feet. I’m strongly in favour of the PGA banning this practice.

Eye Putt

For all non-professional golfers, aimpoint is a particularly useful tool, although I suspect many will object to fellow golfers taking time going through the process. If you are a weekend golfer with a high handicap, playing partners will be chuckling away to themselves, if they see you stepping along your putting line. Most social golfers will eye the line, then putt. Professional golfers do the same, eye the line, then putt.

There is an excellent instruction video explaining the details of the Aimpoint Putting method.
